Wireless N64 controller?

Yeah, my dad got them for me a while back...Nurd! wrote:Weird,I was just looking for Wireless N64 controllers yesterday.
I heards DOCS made some a long time ago, and that they didn't work very well.
... The analog stick on one of them broke, and you needed to be like 10 feet away from the receiver, pointing the inferred's directly at each other. If you could make one marginally better, it would be a vast improvement!

This project isn't as hard as many of you may think... two methods.
1. Build this and use a Wavebird.
2. Use these your transmitter/receiver. If I'm not mistaken, these will provide a "transparent link" as timmeh87 pointed out. I'm not sure exactly what needs to be done with them, but I don't think it's very much... I may not be much more complicated than buying two pairs of them and sticking both a transmitter and receiver on the data line on the console and controller ends (since the data line is bi-directional... no gay jokes, please ).

those DOCS controllers would be super easy to modify to work better. replace the IR leds in the pad with high power ones from digikey, and better yet. double the number of them (just wire the extras in parallel). take the sensors out of the reciever and put in some more sensitive ones from digikey. also try mounting them outside of the reciever base, maximise the amount of light it can recieve from the controllers.

Notice these two controllers have slightly different joysticks.
I have the controller on the right but no receiver. Is there any use for it?

Re: Wireless N64 controller?
I've just been playing around with the 64 controller protocol and it shouldn't be too huge of a problem to make a wireless interface. When the console requests data the controller must respond within a couple of microseconds so I think that it would be easier for a host microcontroller at the console side to poll the controller wirelessly and when the N64 requests the controller data from the microcontroller connected to the console it could respond instantly without much latency (use an interrupt to make it easy).
The possibilities are endless! I'm trying to make a controller with as few components as possible. It'll be very small and also unable to use memory cards and rumble packs. I was thinking of using a 16F88 for the internal ADC converter and the small footprint.

Yeah, i know i sort of necroed this but i didnt see a need for making a new thread when i could just ask in this one.smitty wrote:Super bump returns!

Re: Wireless N64 controller?
Isn't it possible to build in a bluetooth receiver in the receiver thingy, and a bluetooth transmitter in the controller? Just an idea.
Sorry for the bump

Since this thread has already experienced so many bumps, I think it can take another one
Just wanted to ask if anyone has looked into the possibility of hacking the transmitter and receiver of a wireless gamecube controller? They have some bidirectional lines as well, so, wh should it not be possible? I would really really like an answer on this since I will be starting a N64 Project and this i a core component of the build, making wireless controllers.
Not being able to do this would mean a huge drawback for me and I would do much to make wireless controllers possible.
Eagerly awaiting answers

Re: Wireless N64 controller?
Hey, did anyone ever end up getting a transparent-link N64 controller working? Especially an RF one - I'm trying to figure it out now myself, and can't wrap my head around it very easily (pretty new to electronics) - any advice for someone starting out and trying to get a wireless controller up and working?

Re: Wireless N64 controller?
like it was said, just make a gamecube/n64 controller adaptor cable and use a wavebird. if you want, mod the wavebird into the n64 controller shell. its gonna be way easier that way than hacking some transparent serial link system.

Re: Wireless N64 controller?
need to have a microchip aswell i'm told, some guy (Firo or mario reincarnate, unsure) on smashboards said he new how to do it and would work on it in the future.
