Some days, you just get lucky - coin thread!

Post by eagle5953 » Thu Sep 02, 2010 11:02 pm

After purchasing something today, I received in change a "buffalo nickel," also known as an "Indian Head nickel." I had heard of them but had never seen one. They are very uncommon due to age - they stopped making them prior to World War 2 and were mostly pulled from circulation in the 60s. It's not in great shape, as the date is worn off, but it is neat anyway.

From wikipedia: "Today, any talk of an Indian Head nickel showing up in circulation is notable, as only an estimated 1 in 25,000 nickels in circulation today is an Indian Head nickel. The dates are completely worn off of many of those still circulating."

So, to keep this from being bloggy, does anyone collect coins or have a favorite coin?

One time I got a Susan B. Anthony dollar out of a vending machine because it thought it was a quarter.

I've got a $1 silver certificate in my envelope o' old money somewhere. I traded a computer repair customer a $1 bill for it, because they thought it was counterfeit. (It does seem a little bit "off" when you look at it, though.) Here's a picture of it with a $1 federal reserve note for comparison (just the front, the backs are identical):

We've also got a few Kennedy and Eisenhower coins, some silver dollars, $2 bills, steel pennies, all that usual stuff.

Does anybody else hold on to the old-style bills whenever they get them? ($5 and up bills that look like the current $1.)

I used to collect coins, I think I still have a collection floating around somewhere. Lots of Kennedy half dollars, Eishenhower dollars, bicentennial quarters, wheat pennies, etc. I had some rarer ones too that have hopefully increased in value since I got them, lol.

I have a couple of Kennedy Half Dollars, I always liked them because there so big. My father rolls coins, and my grandfather did the same. He liked wheat pennies, and every time I find one I put it in a collection in our living room.
I have nothing clever to say here. Sorry.

I once got a bunch of morgans and a liberty silver dollars for FACE VALUE because the customer was completely retarded. "I dont want these old coins, I just want the cash so I can use them in machines." "But these are worth..." "Just give me a five dollar bill...."

They also traded Sacajaweas, eisenhowers, kennedys, susan B's, and other coins.....WTF.

The only coins I collect are the State Quarters. I have a complete collection from the Philadelphia mint and ~75% of the Denver mint.

Eagle, this reminded me of a saying my mom has "_________ is so tight about money, they can pinch a nickel 'till the Buffalo poops".

Hadn't heard that one.

I got not one, but two more nickels today from a cashier to whom I mentioned yesterday's find! Not sure what's up, but I won't complain. Neither is in decent shape, though.

I collect drummer-boy quarters. My grandfather had a collection of them, and passed it onto me when he passed away, so I just continued it.

As for me I like foreign money, I have a couple Nazi coins along with some U.S.S.R. coins and paper money.

Ahh..coin collecting..killer hobby..and by Killer, i mean killing your wallet lol.

But alas, I'm very much into it! I've got....tons...Let's see...I've got at least one example of every cent type coin (1¢,2¢,3¢,5¢,10¢,25¢, & 50¢) minted since around 1880 (with a handful of examples going back to 1820). Gots a few old silver dollars too; Morgan and Peace dollars. As for paper monies, I have a couple 1920's FED notes and also a few gold and silver certificates as well. Along with the us monies, I have a nice collection of old foreign coins & paper money that I got from my grandpa.
