I am in the process of assembling the parts for my first portable. I have been skimming through this forum for a few days, and read a few recommendations for batteries, but I can't seem to find them now that I'm finally ready to buy. I will be frankencasing the origional n64 case, and the screen will probably sit mostly on top of the case (I'm thinking at a 90 degree angle in front of the cart, still thinking about ventelation) and the controller will probably not be built in (I'm thinking this will be fun to play in the car, and my soldering abilities are turning me away from a built in controller), so there should be a fair bit of space. I don't want to spend a whole lot of money (as you can tell by my choice of screen), and I'd like good battery life. What would you guys recommend?
While in the process of searching for a good battery, another thought came to me. I will be using this screen http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie ... K:MEWAX:IT" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; for the project. It is designed to work in a car under 12v. Do I need a full 12v of power going into it, or could I get away with something lower?
An added bonus question: I'm not anywhere near this point in the project yet, but will I be able to turn on the power to the monitor with the original n64 power switch, or will I have to remove the switch and solder the n64 to always on, then solder in a new power switch? I guess I'm looking for a solder point on the board that outputs 12v (or whatever). (preferably one that is very easy to solder too).
Thanks in advance for all your help. I'm planning on making a build log when I get the parts.

Those screens will work just fine off of 7.5v, and yes, there is a solder point on the board. Look underneath the board, and solder to a point on the 12v line.

Awesome! Thanks!
I found two camcorder batteries that should output 7.5 volts, one is rated at 3000 mAh, and the other is unmarked. I'm charging them and testing them with my multimeter to confirm the voltage.

What kind of camcorder battery comes in a 3000mAh version? Post model #'s here, please.

The 3000mAh battery is a Sony NP-98. It's an old one that fit a Samsung camcorder (though I believe it came with a Sony that we had at one time).Snipeye wrote:What kind of camcorder battery comes in a 3000mAh version? Post model #'s here, please.

Re: A Battery Question (3.5" eBay screen)
The Black's battery (the unidentified one) is outputting about 6.7v, the Sony is on the charger now. I guess I'll find out if it's enough when the screen gets here.
Update: The battery terminals probably need to be cleaned, the battery wasn't fully charged. I'm expecting a full 7.5 volts after an overnight charge.
