Snes Portable Worklog Update:12/27/09

So after reading this forum, re-reading this forum, buying the book, reading the book, re-reading the book, re-reading the forums (get the point yet?) I decided to finall start a snesp. One thing I've noticed though on this forum is there are a lot of portables that get abandoned. What percent of started projects do you think actually get finished? Well I plan on getting this done over christmas break because i won't have anytime once school starts back up. Here's what I have so far:

Snes V2
ZN40 Case (I feel like this will be the rate determining step considering how much LOB said he spent sanding it, not to mention the case is the most important part get get right so your portable looks good)
SNES controller
PS2 screen (cut the top of the board off already)
LEDs + resistors
Ribbon Cable
Wiring from SNES controller ( I figure i got decent amount from this)
Soldering Iron
Desoldering Iron
PCB board
Glue Gun

epoxy (thinking about doing abs cement in addition but it sounds like it takes a while?)

I'm driving home today so hopefully when i get home i can get started on the case and let it set while i start desoldering stuff and LED mod the screen. If anyone can think of other stuff ill need please post it. I also plan to post pictures cause whenever i'm looking through worklogs I'm more interested in seeing pics than i reading what has gotten done.

NOTE: sorry but i think its dumb to name your portable so this is just gunna be a SNES Portable, feel free to name it yourselves if it annoys you.

I recommend using epoxy putty, rather than epoxy, but it sounds good so far! Good luck.

Yes Abs Cement takes at least 24 hours for a thin coat to dry and 4-5 days for thicker coats to dry.

Epoxy sets in 15 minutes and completely hardens in less than 6-8 hours.

Well i just got home and the batteries are in, but my case and LEDS arent... They said they shipped my sample case from poly case on Nov 23rd so I dunno why it hasn't gotten here yet?

Ok case did come in, mom just hid it from me. I'm going to get started on this today. Hopefully my LED's get in soon

Ok so i got everything desoldered from the board. Realized after desoldering the 7805 regulator i probably shouldve done everything one step at a time to make sure i had soldered everything correct. Oh well... So i desoldered the cart slot, and unfortunately pulled 3 pins out, which IMO isn't too bad considering i just taught myself how to desolder... Does anyone have a pic of how to re-insert the pins?

which pins came out? from what i know the 4 pins on the end sides aren't needed. if its one of those you should be fine

Ok so i got the pins put back in, but one of them got bent while putting it in, do you think it's too bad for it to not touch the cart? I guess i can just go ahead and wire them all up and pray that it'll work

i'm guessing it's that 3rd pin on the left side? not sure if thats ground or not. maybe you should look up a pinout for the cart slot if there is one? if that pin is just ground then you Should be fine. not to sure though

im debating about taking one out from the sides that you said weren't necessary and replacing it

K so working on finishing up the case, but I wanted to use some bondo spot putty, but I can't find any at home depot. Wheres a good place to look?

New pics up of my case after a bit of sanding. LOB was right when he said there was a lot of sanding involved but i enjoy it. Need to go get some spot putty and fix up some areas that weren't deep enough to start with. I'm a little worried that my controller pieces weren't flush with the case to start but oh well. I decided to use the psone screen shell in the case cause i like the idea of having a pre cut square and the fact that it has the pegs to secure the screen and board. More to come later

Has anyone tried to use the wiring from an SNES controller to wire up their portable? As i was connecting my capacitors to the board i realized that all it is is copper ribbon wrapped around a piece of string. Will this still work??
