may attempt N64 Portable

Post by vskid » Fri Mar 25, 2005 9:16 am

I have been lurking around for about a month. I am thinking that I will start a n64 portable. I have an official controller, n64 w/ hook ups, and about $60 left in my budget. I have drawn a concept that I will post when I have drawn it better. I don't plan on making it battery powered (at least until I get more money). My plan is to have it somewhat moduler, making a cradle sort of thing with half a controller on each side, a screen on top, and a modified n64 that can slide in and out. I have been reading posts and I wonder if I could move the cart slot with my soldering capabilities (none). If you have any sugestions please help. I should be getting a PS1 screen soon. Thanks :D

Lean how to solder before you even start. Get a broken peice of electronics, take it apart, take things off, and put them on again, using your soldering iron. You can get really good at it like that.

A good way of desolderring for a beginner is to use copper (desolderring) strips. http://www.doomportables.org/basics.php#soldering

I finally got my n64 apart. I melted a pen, put it in and unscrewed the screw. I had to remelt it for each screw. I should hopefully have pics of my concept and n64 on sometime tomorrow.

That looks awesome. That would be totally cool with a game like Flight Simulator.

What is the average price that psone screens go for on ebay? Are third party screens any good, and if so which brand? Is there any way to put leds in tact switches? It would be cool to replace all of the buttons with tacts that have an led the same color as the button it replaced and the lights would come on when ever it is plugged into a 64 that is on.

Try EB games for screens, i get Interact 4" PSone's for 25-40 dollars used depending on condition. For some teason, after the 3 hurricanes, there were like 30 screens there. As for the controller ?, theres a mod where you just run switches to the pins on the chip. But i'd learn to solder first

Laptop: P3-m 800 Mhz, 320 MB ram, 20 GB HDD, Win XP PRO, 8x DVD, $5 in early 2005

I have a 7.2V 5Wh Sony infolithium battery for my video camera. I was wondering what/ how to find the amps so that I know if it is worth it to get one for a portable.
