Interest thread: Radica GOAC PCB with built-in Cart slot

Post by xenepp » Sat Mar 03, 2007 9:38 am

It's been ages since I visited this little project but found it in the loft yesterday and since I've been fiddling with circuit design decided maybe it's time to make up some custom PCBs with GOACs built in so guys who want to do this don't have to pull their hair out anymore getting it to work plus I can have a nice one myself ;)

Here's the idea.

Make a small PCB (roughly the size of the Radica board) with a built in cartridge slot with stereo sound and composite out.

It'd mean, buying a Radica for each PCB to donate parts but I don't think they are going for much now, I've seen them go for as little as $0.99 recently on ebay.

The PCB fabrication however will cost a bit plus my time to make up the boards, I'd estimate a target price of around $70 or so. They'll be PROPER factory made PCBs, I've done this many times since and they have always been great.

So is anyone interested? If you are, what would you like to see on the PCB? Also, how would you want the PCB mounted? Vertically or horinontally?

If there's enough interest initially, I'll make up a CAD drawing to see what everyone thinks.

The GOAC in the Radica expoxied directly to the board, and is therefore not removable. The rom is desolderable, but not the GOAC.

I wouldn't need to desolder it, I have a layout for the board so can just cut away the surrounding PCB leaving the chip then solder that to a custom PCB.

Easy ;)

Just need some interest to make it worth doing!

Maybe I'll make up a CAD model to show you guys what I mean.

If you are interested, just post here!

Im interested to see how your going to connect the goac to your board. Thats a lot of traces..

Sure is! Pretty confident I can do it though, I have a number of ideas of how I'm going to go about that, plus a few methods of cutting the board without lifting those traces.

I'm actually starting the design of the PCB right now, should be done inside a week. We'll see how we go.

Did they ever sell radica's at walmart? I think I saw something like that.

Stereo?

Post by paulpsomiadis » Fri Mar 09, 2007 9:34 am

@xenepp - you mention Stereo sound...

I hear that there is a MOD for this floating around, do you happen to know where I can get the info on the STEREO mod. :?:

Cheers! 8)

Seems like a lot of trouble for something like this.

So you plan on cutting the PCB around the chip, then attempting to connect wires to the remains of the traces?

What happens if this is a multi-layered PCB?

Just doesn't seem practical.
