A VERY different Super Joy 3 NOAC cartridge slot

Post by gamemasterful » Sat Dec 19, 2009 1:17 am

So I picked up a Power Player / Super Joy 3 system thinking I would make it into a portable NES when I discovered this.

http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v290/ ... %20Player/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

It's unlike anything I've ever seen on the forums. I've got no idea about the pinout.
But has anyone ever seen this board before? As far as I can tell, it's a miniaturized Famicom game and connector. And I'd still love to use this in a portable because the board is so gosh darned small! It could fit inside HALF an NES controller! And the 7805 lets me know this thing runs off 5v too, but now might be the best time to invest in a multimeter I believe...

The connector has 68 pins, which is neither NES or Famicom, the same with the cartridge.

It might be NES with a few pins missing. You know, the ones that were never really used. But not all of them for some odd reason... It IS weird... Darn those Super Joy makers.

I think I know what I'm going to do with it, instead of trying to figure out the pinout, I'm just going to extend the connector to move the cartridge around (which by itself is the size of a board-thin AA.)

Edit: taking a closer look at the pins of the cartridge outside of its casing, at least 8 pins lead to nothing on the board. The first and last two of each side have no leads coming off of them. But there are some more questionable pins in the center that also seem to lead to nothing, but I'm not sure since the chip/blob is there. So it might actually be 60 pin.

It's just a re-wired famicom connector. I'd guess they "expanded" the 60pin famicom pinout to fit into their 68pin connector, the connections should be mostly the same but without a logic analyzer it'd be hard to tell.

This is one of those where you're best off leaving it as-is and just keeping the cartridge pcb.

Where did you pick this one up? It is relevant to my interests.

Goodwill, so kinda makes it impossible to tell, but they are selling some even newer ones at the mall near where I live, where the woman lowers her price from $70 all the way down to $35. They also have no battery pack and no normal 60-pin connector, so I believe they are built the same as this, just without a removable cartridge. But I'd like to finish the three portables I'm working on and sell at least one of them before I pick up another.

I've found another NAOC. This time inside of a penguin. And it comes with a wireless controller.
