So yeah....I'm making one more lol...just cause I can XD The plan for this design...smallness. I'm aiming to create my smallest portable NES yet. After much design work, I'm 100% certain that I can keep the whole device within the size limits of an original Game Boy! The key will be the cart placement, where instead of having the cart slide through the top of a landscape case, it will instead stick straight out the back in a portrait style case.
SO without further delays, progress!
Yeah, I already started this thing before starting the thread lol.
Just a little while ago, I purchased some squishy tacts for the controller board. These will be MUCH easier to work with than using original buttons (like on the PNES Mark2A, and the Neutron). Also, they feel a bazillion times better than regular clicky tacts.
As can be seen from this layout, it's pretty much identical to the layout on the GBO.
Just like on the Neutron, I'm using a "centralized board" for this machine. The C-board I made for the Neutron worked out so well, that I couldn't help but duplicate the design for this PNES MarkIII. The only real difference on this is the addition of a better video amp for the NOAC, and much smaller caps (many salvaged from burned out radicas ).
That's all for now...next time we'll get onto the case work

Re: P-NES MarkIII
All right..here's an update!
I decided to use a somewhat new method (for me) to make the case...as I wanted it to be asymmetrical...
I think the pictures speak for themselves lol.
SO once the mold was done..it was onto the vacuum action!
I decided to set up a slightly smaller holder for my plastic sheets..why? because I had a few scrap slabs just sitting around that I couldn't use with my normal plastic holder lol.
The case rear pulled somewhat...too well...it somehow wound up looking quite glossy when it was done
Once pulled, I then carefully got the cut out and sanded down each case half...
After tons and tons of filing...I finally got all the holes in the case halves.
As can be seen from all of this, the PNES MarkIII is basically a GBO with a 3.5" color screen, and a really big vertical cart slot
Now that the case is nearly finished, all that is left is the paint...then...final assembly! Woot!

Re: P-NES MarkIII
OOokay...2nd to last update!
The case painting is finished!
I decided on a 2-color design..mainly because I couldn't decide what color I wanted it to be lol.
I opted for this black/red color look, which works quite nicely with the red buttons on the front
For some odd reason, the red back looks really orange in this picture
How do you like that shimmer? Yeah...glossy for the win!
Finally got the guts squeezed into it...
Observe, the awesome cart slot placement that actually makes good use of the slot's death grip
Now running one of the coolest games you'll never hear about
It's nearly complete now, just gotta add my special decals and it'll be finished
EDIT: I should also mention...this is the first time I've ever gotten the screen totally square in the case

Awesome! What plastic do you use? PVC? It looks thick!

Re: P-NES MarkIII
I use .080 polystyrene plastic. It's actually pretty thin overall. Any thinner and it might be too weak to handle the stress of that death gripping cart slot.

that looks really cool.

I must say your work never fails to impress me.
May I ask the deminsions of that case, or is it the same as a DMG?

Re: P-NES MarkIII
Other than the case being just under 1/8" thicker, it's the same size as an original Game Boy.

This has to be one of my all-time favorite portable projects from this site! Very retro, like the portable I would have wished for back in 1989!
What did you end up using for batteries and screen? I'm guessing standard AA's and a PS1 LCD.

The batteries are standard AAs, but the screen is one of those car reverse monitors from ebay (3.5" screen).
