Just playing around with tracker software...

OK I'm just tinkering around with Modplug Tracker. It can open MIDI files and use WAV sounds as the instruments. It's pretty fun. (that's how they made the audio for YTMNDs like http://profxtiger.ytmnd.com/ and http://windowslol.ytmnd.com/ )

Here's my first experiment. It came out pretty well. It's the SMB Overworld music, but guess what I used as the instruments.

windows sounds

(it's a flash file so I could just throw it up onto ImageShack.)

Hint- you all probably hear them every day.
hint 2- the lead instrument sounds sort of like a marimba for most of the higher notes.

If anyone has some MIDI file sthey have composed, look at ModPlug Tracker. It comes with sawtooth, sine, and square wave clips to use, along with a bunch of sound effects on top of the MIDI instruments. Turn your music into 8 and 16 bit music!

ModPlug Tracker is some cool software - it's nice that you can save to Impulse Tracker and ScreamTracker modules. I'm using it to write some music right now...based on an Adlib demo song

You're only scratching the surface when you import MIDIs though - its true strength is original music composition. The following is a good example of the tracker/module type music:

You'll need ModPlug Tracker / Player to listen to it.
