Consolizing MVS advice

Post by Stunan » Sun Feb 15, 2009 5:22 pm

Hey guys I've just finished an MVS supergun project (with the help of a vogatek mark 3) and now I would like to take it to the next level and create a consolized MVS system
however I am not very experienced and have a couple of questions I would greatly appreciate your help (I am using an MV-1FZ board).

1. I am going to use a scart output for the video, is it possible to connect the sound through scart?

2. I live in the UK, are there any other possible power options apart from 5v or any recommended adapters?

3. How would I go about connecting the power source to the board e.g must the power socket be connected to all of the 5v pins on the connector or must it be connected directly onto the board?

a premade JAMMA harness would be a great place to start as it has all of the wires for controls power video etc allready there you would just have to cut to length :D as to scart i cant help you but its a standard RGB video signal so it will work with some VGA devices (im assuming its a 15khz sync rate tho versus 31 for normal vga devices) like multiscan monitors, amiga monitors etc. i had mine hooked to my amiga 1080 monitor and it looked great

Thankyou for your suggestion, I think ill take the route of buying a 56-pin jamma connector and then wiring it up myslef. I'm more in favour of doing it this way as I'd like to put the ports etc onto the plastic cover of the board to give it a more console feel and taking up less room instead of having a big supergun attached to the front. I've done a bit of research and im thinking the safest way to power the board would be via a 4-pin molex connector like a cd drive what do you guys think about doing it this way?

when i was testing my mv1b i used an AT power supply so a 4 pin molex connector would work fine. what i was talking about was more or less what you said only the jamma harness i got was prewired instead of just the connector

Thats great thanks at least i know it should work then, i found this and thought it could be wired similar to this http://www.gamesx.com/arcade/cheapjamma.htm but followind the neo pinouts and using rgb scart instead of a monitor output. I have also read that it is possible to bypass the onboard amplifier if you wire the sound straight from the board so that the sound will be suitable to go through a tv without damaging it, i dont know if anyone knows anything about this?

I have some experience with this, as I have made one of my own. For the +5v, I would suggest you connect to all the 5 volt pins, because occasionally you will run across a cartridge with more components inside which expects a higher amperage and your wiring may not be able to deliver. That's why they have more than one +5v pin. As for SCART, I'm in the US and nothing here has SCART, so I'm clueless about that. For the sound mod, if you are using the MV-1FZ (which I assume you are) you should look at this website:

http://www.neobitz.com/Pages/Mods/MV1FZ-S.aspx

Not only do you eliminate the need for 12v, you also get stereo sound instead of mono.

Good luck, and ask if you have any more questions.

EDIT: 2 things you should know about:
You can connect the audio out to the jamma edge, but turn the volume control on the MVS mobo all the way down before powering up, and then just nudge it up a little bit until you can hear it.
Secondly, you can find all the wiring information you'll ever need, and manuals for you mobo here:

Connect all four 5 volts??

I completely forgot that I was working on an MVS consolization project. I have two different boards that I am working with....

ANyways, I have an SCART RGB to component svideo adapter that I was planning on using for this project.

Well, only connect all 4 if you don't have big gauge wires. I connected 2 but I was using large wires so I got away with it. I tried doing just one with a smaller wire and there was not enough amperage for some of the higher meg games, which simply have more chips inside and can increase the power draw by quite a bit. Apparently things like Rage of the Dragons and SamSho 5 Special can put the hurt on the power supply because of the large number of chips in the cartridges.

Out of curiosity, what MVS boards are you tinkering with? I used an MV-1FZS for mine, but I also have messed with an MV-1B, which I still have but doesn't have the sound working yet. I got it cheap with the idea of fixing the sound and overclocking it and haven't been able to fix the sound so I have not yet done any overclock.

I have an mv1b too. I got it for cheap because they thought it was messed up, but in the pic they sent me to display the screens showed no cart...go fig. I have another one on the way except it has a vertical slot. I figured it might be better to consolize and make it like an old genesis.

Nice. I have finally found the info for doing the stereo mod for my MV-1B, so it's coming back to life as soon as I can get the parts. Check this pic to see where to grab the audio lines:

I'm also going to have to replace a couple caps, no biggie there.

Received my new mvs board in the mail. It's an MV1C and its not much bigger than the MV1B
