Awesome, I knew it was a good idea! Actually, I never thought of that untill I saw that one picture.

AAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaarrrrrrrggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhh
Today I was trimming the LCD case with a craft knife(stupidly with lcd inside), have a guess what happened?
You guessed it, I managed to slice straight through the ribbon cable. Luckily it was savable.
What next.....anyway, a couple of progress pics
Sanded down LCD casing
Lots of Brasso-ing later

Wow, that is awesome! A few questions:
Your sig says you need screens, is that still true? I have a nice 7" widescreen, and a few others.
Also, you said earlier that you think you may have a chance of entering the compo? It started July 20th. Maybe a day or two could slide, but that gives you an almost two week head start.
You have given me an awesome idea, though, this portable is looking to be awesome!

Actually palmertech, i started it the day after the comp started as i blew up the first one, I got this one from a car boot on the day it started. Check this thread earlier on, the second revision is a lot different to the first and totally from scratch.
If people still have issues with me entering though, its no big deal. I still enjoyed making it all the same and Ill still get to see the rest of them.
@Dark-Aries - Im just lazy....seriously, those wires are so small as they are.

awesome repair at the lcd.
those small traces are near imposible to be repared by me with my cuarent skills and tools.
maybe in two years with more experience earned ..... I will be able
man, how the hell did you removed the plastic to get access to the metal traces without remove also the metal?
I remember long time ago, I broken a ribbon cable I tried to burn arround half second, but it also crapped the traces

I have fixed a DS Lite ribbon cable before! It had the same thing, a few traces (4) on the edge of the cable sliced by an exacto. I use an exacto attachement on my soldering iron, slowly scraping a bit at a time, in short strokes so I do not melt the ribbon. Then light sandpaper, and flux it. Also, mad soldering skillz are not needed; By scraping larger pieces away, offset so they are not next to each other, you can make it pretty easy on yourself.
Although I definitely do not suggest you take up fixing ribbon cables as a hobby. You will live a much shorter life.

Excellent
Its really not as difficult or as fragile as it looks. Just scrape away the plastic with a knife(in one direction only, not back and forth) until you get to the shiny copper, then put on some flux, tin the traces and the wire, and solder together. Keep the contact with your iron to a minimum, I just put a blob on the end and dab it.kasar wrote:awesome repair at the lcd.

HOW do you plan on keeping the L/R buttons in their existing "pressure sensitive" state?:? I just hacked off the little slider switch and used the "pushed all-the-way in" circut.
Also, how did you manage to soldier the tiny traces on the ribbon cable??? If I tried, I'd most likely burn it up or use too much solder.
Lastly, can you get that copper wire stuff with the ":shock:invisible insulation" at a place like Radio Shack or just online or something?
